Porsche 918 Spyder Will Likely Sell Out

Porsche is confidently predicting its upcoming 918 Spyder hybrid hypercar will easily sell out once test drives begin.

With news coming in that McLaren’s P1 is just about sold out, Porsche’s own upcoming hybrid hypercar wonder, the 918 Spyder, is also expected to meet a similar fate not long after it goes on sale. According to the German automaker’s head of R&D, Wolfgang Hatz, there are "a lot of customers interested in (the 918 Spyder), but the car is expensive, and that high price point means that many of them want to drive it before they spend their money. When the first cars are ready, and the customer can drive them, I am confident we will sell them all."

The 918 has a hybrid powertrain that features a V8 engine paired up with two electric motors, allowing for the car to drive at high speeds on electric power only. Performance, as expected will be quite something: 0-62 mph in 3.2 seconds and a top speed that’s expected to exceed 199 mph. On top of that, the 918 should return about 78 mpg. But Hatz doesn’t believe the 918 can be directly compared to other hybrid hypercars like the P1 or even the LaFerrari. "The Porsche 918 is so different. At present, nobody outside our R&D group has experienced a supersports car with more electric power. This is something unique, and really quite special."
